The genre of horror-based themes set in Chernobyl post-nuclear disaster is a rather niche corner of the market, admittedly, but there are at least two franchises that have made their nest in this specific part of the industry, GSC Game World’sS.T.A.L.K.E.R.and The Farm 51’sChernobylite. While the former is the one that most fans will immediately think of, especially withSTALKER 2and the recent NFT fiasco, the latter is still a strong entry in this particular genre, receiving high praise since its PC release this summer. Now the latter is being given a new update, which comes with some free DLC.
According to the official Steam page,Chernobylitehas received a recent, and rather substantial, patch just in time for the holidays. Thehorror game set in Eastern Europe’s Exclusion Zonenow has some extra DLC, which comes part of the “Ghost Town” content from a previous update, and is completely free. The patch brings with it a new level, Pripyat Residential Area, which, according to the notes, invites players to explore a new area with new events and resources to collect. There’s also some new side missions as well, which include fetching supply drops, and some additional monster hunts.

Chernobyliteis chock-full of side quests and companions, which already gives it quite a bit of content. This new DLC only adds to that, expanding the in-game world that’s set in the very real area where the Chernobyl disaster occurred. As with any good update, this one also comes with patches and tweaks to iron out any issues that players have been experiencing in the game. On top of this, the developers also say that they have fixed a few errors in the Monster Hunter DLC that came before this one, making it so that creatures are now easier to find.
Chernobylitecan be quite a difficult game to get into. There’s a lot of land to explore, but each area is home to monster and human enemy NPCs. The whole game centers around this idea of sneaking around the Exclusion Zone for supplies, gathering intel and companions, keeping survivors happy, and base-building, all wrapped up in a horror cloak.
As indie horror video games go, The Farm 51’s is a visually stunning, and tricky, addition to the genre, especially among those set in Chernobyl, which are few and far between. WhileSTALKER2 is currently on everyone’s lips right now,Chernobylitesits alongside it as a pretty intense stealth game that hardcore horror fans have been enjoying these past few months.
Chernobyliteis available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, with plans to release ports for PS5 and Xbox Series.
