Between raiding cutting-edge content with their guild and goofing off in towns, the shared experiences ofWorld of Warcraftplayers are innumerable, even as some of them have left the game. However, withnew content arriving soon in Patch 10.0.5inDragonflight, and the impending return of the Ulduar raid inWrath of the Lich King Classic, the community will have plenty to look forward to in the near term, no matter which time period in Azeroth they prefer.RELATED:World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic Ulduar Raid Release Date RevealedA Reddit user and content creator by the name of LambbChopss was cleaning her childhood home recently, and found a SteelSeries Zboard keyboard that she had used over 15 years ago to playWorld of Warcrafton. LambbChopss then posted her discovery on the r/wow subreddit and on Twitter. The SteelSeries Zboard was a membrane keyboard that had interchangeable and collectible faceplates, with LambbChopss' keyboard featuring some key art fromThe Burning Crusade. The right side of the Zboard replaced the traditional NumPad with buttons made for features specific toWorld of Warcraft, such as accessing different chats and action bar switching. The Zboard was sold by SteelSeries during the latter half of the 2000s, when bothWorld of Warcraftand Windows XPwere commonplace.
Though the Home button had fallen off of the right side, LambbChopss said she had not tested to see if her Zboard still worked. Nonetheless, her trip down memory lane received over 700 upvotes within a day on r/wow, and caught the attention of SteelSeries on Twitter. Though the Zboard has been retired for years, SteelSeries has gone on to make other devices such asthe SteelSeries Apex 3 TKL keyboard. However, the peripheral maker acknowledged their history and remarked, “imagine an updated version” in a quote-tweet. Whether the Zboard will return in some capacity or not remains to be seen.
As Blizzard looks toward the future of the game in 2023 and beyond, the rich history ofWorld of Warcraftremains a soft spot for players of all kinds. With tales from the past such as LambbChopss' own, the history ofWorld of Warcraftgoes beyond the game itself. Only time will tell how much of that history will continue to be dug up.
